RugMark’s Campaign to End Child Labor

What’s the single most beautiful thing about an imported rug?

Nearly 300,000 are exploited in the carpet industry to weave carpets for American homes. The Most Beautiful Rug is designed to put an end to exploitative child labor in the South Asian carpet industry within the next decade.

The campaign will:

  • educate consumers about rugs and carpets produced without the use of child labor
  • invite interior designers to recommend child-labor-free rugs for their clients
  • ask retailers to carry RugMark rugs
  • encourage importers to seek independent certification.

Most people are not aware of illegal child labor in the carpet industry. Now there’s an easy way to find out if a rug has been made with child labor. Look for the individually numbered RugMark label on the back of an imported rug. It means RugMark independently certified the rug and it was made without the use of child labor. It’s your best assurance that no child labor was used in the manufacture of a carpet or rug you are buying.

RugMark is an international nonprofit organization working to eliminate child labor from the South Asian carpet industry. Since 1995 the organization has helped to reduce the number of children working illegally as weavers in India, Nepal and Pakistan from one million to 300,000. Now more children are going to school, enjoying being children and living with hope for the future.

Just a 15% market share of RugMark certified rugs would eliminate child labor in South Asia’s handmade carpet and rug industry.

You can help. Buy, sell or recommend a RugMark rug or donate to the campaign.
