John Kurtz, designer and producer of New Moon, is a nationally recognized expert in the complex field of oriental rugs. Over the years, through his PBS television series, John has introduced millions of viewers to the world of oriental rugs. Each rug in the New Moon collection is an original design. A trained artist, John sketches and paints each rug before it is hand woven in Nepal from the most spectacular materials in the world, such as hand-spun, 100 percent Tibetan wool and, in a select few cases, luxurious Chinese silk. As a founding member of the RugMark Foundation, New Moon works to abolish illegal child labor in the carpet industry, ensuring its rugs are the most beautiful.
New Moon is a small, family-owned company dedicated to the highest standards of design and workmanship. Owners of New Moon™ carpets can take pride in knowing that the company commitment is to continually maintain these standards, both for products and the well-being of weavers. And every New Moon rug is a signed original–– a personal guarantee of quality and authenticity from a trustworthy name.
New Moon Rugs reflect the rich and time-honored art of rug weaving. They are hand-knotted with 100 percent Tibetan wool that is hand-spun and dyed in small batches to achieve the highly desired abrash effect, a subtle variation in hue that enhances the richness of the color and makes the designs come alive. Each New Moon rug is a work of art created by skilled craftspeople. The traditional wool-gathering, hand-dyeing and hand-knotting techniques produce slight variations in dimension, abrash and color matching that are to be expected and that are highly valued in a hand-crafted product. Each rug is truly unique.
