About the Campaign
The handmade rug industry has one of the highest child labor rates in the world. More than 250,000 children in South Asia between the ages of 4 and 14 are forced to trade their childhoods and their futures for endless hours of hard labor on carpet looms. Many are kidnapped or trafficked. These children are caught in a form of modern day slavery, unable to break free without help.
GoodWeave was founded on a simple premise: If enough people are made aware of the truth about handmade rugs, exploitative child labor in the industry can be eradicated once and for all.
Most consumers don't realize that they are sponsoring child labor with their purchases. Through public outreach, media coverage and the active participation of socially responsible importers, designers and retailers, the GoodWeave campaign is designed to raise awareness of this epidemic.
The GoodWeave campaign doesn’t just inform consumers about the problem, it offers them a solution. Our partner importers and exporters support ethical business practices, and provide consumers with socially responsible choices. By demanding rugs certified by GoodWeave, you can be assured that your rug is truly beautiful—because it was made by adult artisans, not by child labor.
Help spread the word about GoodWeave. Tell your friends and colleagues to ask for the GoodWeave label. Join our Facebook cause and follow GoodWeave on Twitter. Ask your local retailers to carry GoodWeave certified rugs.

Children's Stories
At the age of five, Manju was already working on the rug looms. While she has since been found and freed from illegal carpet work, some 250,000 children throughout South Asia still toil in obscurity. Through the GoodWeave certification program more than 3,600 kids like Manju have been rescued, rehabilitated and educated, and thousands more deterred from entering the work force.
